AD Ports Group reported a 6% reduction in emissions intensity in 2025, even as its total greenhouse gas emissions increased 13% amid continued expansion of its global ports, maritime and logistics operations.
According to the Abu Dhabi-based company's 2025 Sustainability Report, emissions intensity across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 declined to 190.68 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) per AED 1 million in revenue, compared with 203.06 tCO2e in 2024.
The improvement came as Group revenue increased 20% to AED 20.77 billion. However, absolute emissions, including those associated with suppliers and customers, climbed to 3.96 million tCO2e from 3.51 million tCO2e a year earlier.
AD Ports attributed the reduction in emissions intensity to improved operational efficiencies, renewable electricity, alternative marine fuels and increased vessel electrification.
The company's Maritime & Shipping Cluster, which accounted for 51% of Group revenue, generated approximately 50% of total emissions. Ports contributed 24%, Logistics 21%, and Economic Cities & Free Zones 5%, according to the report.
During 2025, AD Ports introduced several initiatives supporting its decarbonization strategy, including LNG-powered Pure Car and Truck Carriers operating through its United Global Ro-Ro venture and ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations.
The Group also announced plans with Nimex Terminals to develop LNG and liquefied petroleum gas terminal hubs at Khalifa Port. Additionally, it purchased 47,960 MWh of renewable energy certificates to reduce the reported emissions intensity associated with electricity, heating and cooling.
AD Ports has established a decarbonization roadmap comprising 139 initiatives through 2050, supported by projected investments of $636 million. The program targets cumulative emissions reductions of 2.9 million tCO2e and includes renewable energy adoption, fleet fuel transition and low-carbon port infrastructure.
"By embedding decarbonisation into our business strategy, we are positioning the Group for lasting emissions reductions while strengthening operational resilience and competitiveness," said Captain Saif Al Mheiri, Abu Dhabi Maritime CEO and Group Chief Sustainability & Risk Officer.
The report also highlighted improvements in waste management. AD Ports diverted 10,303 tonnes of waste from disposal in 2025, up 24% from 8,341 tonnes in 2024. Non-hazardous waste recycling increased 23% to 10,127 tonnes.
The company said sustainability performance is incorporated into corporate decision-making, with a portion of senior management compensation linked to achieving environmental targets.
